We were appointed to write a Historic Assessment to accompany a planning application to redevelop the Newgate Shopping Centre and Newgate Hotel.  The site is in the Central Conservation Area of Newcastle upon Tyne, and included a grade II listed building fronting Clayton Street.

The purpose of the document was to demonstrate an understanding of the historical development of the site, and explain its context with the wider conservation area.

Although Newcastle upon Tyne plays host to a number of interesting – and architecturally significant – post-war 20th century buildings, our report proposed that the poor-quality design and materials of the hotel and shopping centre meant that they were not of any special architectural interest, and that redevelopment of the site could have a positive impact on the wider conservation area.

At the conclusion of the report, it was presented to a Newcastle Conservation Advisory Panel meeting.  Planning consent was subsequently granted.
