Assessment of various boundary treatments

We were commissioned to enhance the understanding of the Cleadon Conservation Area with a buildings and boundary treatments survey by South Tyneside Council in 2009. The boundary of the conservation area, first designated in 1975, was extended to include the Cleadon Plantation area in 2004 - the focus of this study.

The buildings survey comprised a gazetteer of 38 buildings identified by the Council for further study, and we conducted an assessement of all the boundary treatments found in the Cleadon Plantation Character Area.

Each gazetteer entry comprised descriptive information, an assessment of its condition from a visual external inspection only, and recommendations for each property as considered appropriate. Boundary treatments were identified throughout the area and were plotted on a map to show distribution of types. Descriptive information, summary of condition and recommendations were included for each type of boundary treatment found.
